How to Do the Lemonade Diet?

The Lemonade diet isn’t actually a diet — rather, it’s a cleanse. What does this mean? Well, the lemonade diet is actually a fast, allowing you no food at all for at least ten days, meant to cleanse your system of all toxins and nastiness.

The original name for this diet/fast is the Master Cleanse, and it’s often called the lemonade diet because your only sustenance will come from a type of lemonade made from maple syrup and lemons.

If you’re looking for a diet that you can stick to for the long term, this definitely isn’t it. You won’t be able to eat on the lemonade diet, and it’s not recommended that you use it for more than 40 days, as you will actually begin to starve. If you don’t have a lot of self-discipline, this is not the diet for you.

During the lemonade diet, you will only be able to intake lemon juice, water, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and teas. There is no solid food in this diet, as it is actually fast. During at least ten days, you will need to drink ten daily servings of the following recipe:

  • 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp organic grade B maple syrup
  • 1/10 tsp or more cayenne pepper
  • 1 c. purified water (not tap water)

You can make a large batch of the lemonade up by multiplying the quantities above, but be sure not to keep it in the refrigerator for more than three days.

In addition to the ten daily servings of lemonade, you will also drink an herbal laxative tea each evening, and a saltwater flush (made from 2 tsp of sea salt added to a quart of warm water) every morning.

The laxative tea, made from an herb called Senna, and the salt water flush are meant to help your body rid itself of more toxins. You are also allowed to drink a small amount of peppermint tea.

At the end of the lemonade diet, you will need to follow a strict “coming off the cleanse” eating and drinking plan and will not be able to eat normally for some time.

It’s important to note that the lemonade diet is not intended as a weight-loss diet. Rather, it is intended to clean the system. However, most people who go on the lemonade diet do lose weight — after all, you’re cleansing your body and ingesting very very few calories — and generally lose about 5–10 pounds.

The idea behind the lemonade diet is that it will give you increased energy, an appetite for healthier foods, a clearer mind, and a healthier body. Though you will certainly feel some hunger while on the diet, generally, it is less than you might think.

The cleanse is intended to help you change your eating habits, and you will probably find that, afterward, you don’t want to eat as normal — you will crave more fruits and vegetables and healthier foods.

Like all short-term diets, the lemonade diet will not be a miracle weight loss cure. While it may help you to feel healthier and eat better, its results are only temporary. It’s up to you to make the lifestyle changes necessary to make any weight loss permanent.
